Cointelegraph Catalogs Oddest Assets Tokenized Onchain, From Cows to Farts

Cointelegraph’s magazine highlighted a growing trend of unconventional assets being tokenized onchain, prompted by a viral case involving Brazil’s B3 stock exchange. According to the outlet, a farmer in southern Brazil used 10 cows as collateral for a 100,000 Brazilian real loan, roughly $19,600, by registering the cattle into a blockchain-based system. The deal was structured by Brazilian investment fund Target FIDC, which gave each cow a unique digital token tied to an encrypted digital identity, Cointelegraph reported.

The outlet noted the arrangement could eventually support around $80 million in livestock-backed financing across participating farms, given that the global agriculture industry generated roughly $4 trillion in value added in 2023.

Cointelegraph’s list of unusual tokenized items also included a more novelty-driven example from the pandemic era, when filmmaker Alex Ramirez-Mallis recorded a year’s worth of his own flatulence and minted each instance as a nonfungible token. Each NFT reportedly sold for 0.05 ETH, about $85 at the time, per the outlet.

Other examples cited by Cointelegraph include whiskey casks, where investors can buy whole or fractional ownership of maturing Scotch whisky stored in bonded warehouses, and shares of racehorses, an asset class traditionally limited to wealthy owners due to high breeding, training and upkeep costs. Tokenization, the outlet said, is beginning to divide thoroughbred ownership into smaller digital shares accessible to more investors.

Cointelegraph framed the roundup as evidence that tokenization is expanding well beyond financial instruments and into physical and even absurd assets, following BlackRock CEO Larry Fink’s prediction that every asset will eventually be tokenized.
